I Like My Smoothies Green

For many, the beginning of a new year means focusing on healthy habits. If I had a dollar for every New Years resolution based on healthy eating, I’d be having one awesome shopping spree. Every year, I tend to overeat during the holiday season. It’s difficult to pass up on holiday sweets and treats. This last holiday season, I definitely had too much sugar in my daily diet. From Christmas cookies, to egg nog, to peppermint bark; it was too much. I began to feel tired all the time, and could sense a lasting headache until I ate more sugar. Soon after, just the sight of processed food made me sick.

The minute the holidays were over, I cut out almost all sugar. I believe that all diets work differently for each person; and sometimes certain diets don’t work at all. I’ve learned the best thing for me to feel healthier, and to trim down, is to cut out sugars and carbs. I’ve read you shouldn’t eat apples because of their high sugar count, or bananas because their loaded with carbs. Listen, I’m no nutritionist by any means, but I think if you’re choosing to eat an apple for breakfast over a stack of pancakes, you’re ahead of the game.

I’ve found that an easy way for me to begin eating healthy is to replace meals, or a meal, with green smoothies. Since the beginning of January, I’ve had a green smoothie every morning. I follow this morning ritual by eating a light, portion controlled lunch and dinner. You might be thinking, yuck who wants to drink a leafy green smoothie? Although I don’t mind an earthy smoothie, I’d rather have a sweet and creamy smoothie. Luckily, I found a smoothie mix that makes kale or spinach smoothies taste like a sweet vanilla-apple milkshake. I’ve truly been making the most delicious smoothies ever.

Before I share the smoothie recipe with you, I want to discuss my new favorite mix more. The mix is from the Concord Foods brand, and it is called the Kale & Apple Smoothie Mix with Protein. The packets are inexpensive, and depending on the supermarket, you can might be able to catch them on sale for 3 for $4. Each packet has two servings. For me, I get two mornings of smoothies per packet. Sometimes, I even get 3 smoothies out of one mix. You don’t need to use much mix for it to make the smoothie taste delicious. If you’re looking for a sweeter smoothie, I would definitely suggest using half a packet. Per serving there are only 60 calories, no fats, only 7 grams of sugar, only 9 carbs and even 5 grams of protein! See the recipe below to discover what other items I put in the smoothies. It tastes so good, you’ll forget there is anything leafy and green in it.
